The era of mass ownership

The fact that more than 60% of Los Angeles County households has 2 cars or more is a reflection of the era of mass automobile ownership in which Los Angeles was constructed. But if today private vehicles are dominating the landscape of cities, in the coming years they are going to suffer a lot of changes.
One of the biggest challenge is that people probably won’t own one. Thanks to car sharing and the introduction of driverless vehicles, the whole system of car ownership is being transformed, and very soon may not appear as it has for the past century.
There are clearly many benefits to reducing car ownership: reducing traffic deaths, reducing planet-warming emissions, reducing time wasted sitting in cars, reducing the amount of land in cities devoted to parking.
